1. What is NZ ITF Taekwon-Do?
NZ ITF Taekwon-Do is a martial arts centre that offers inclusive Taekwon-Do training for people of all ages and abilities. We focus on discipline, physical fitness, self-defense, and competitive Taekwon-Do. We also specialize in teaching individuals with disabilities.
2. Where is NZ ITF Taekwon-Do located?
Our main centre is based in the Hawke’s Bay region of New Zealand. We also work with several schools in the area to offer Taekwon-Do classes. We have Manawatu and Northland involved with NZ ITF. We are always open to see more join NZ ITF in the near future which we know we can provide excellent opportunities for those involved!!!
3. Who runs NZ ITF Taekwon-Do?
NZ ITF Taekwon-Do is led by Ben Evans, an experienced 6 Degree International Instructor, who has dedicated his life to teaching Taekwon-Do to individuals with disabilities and people from low socioeconomic backgrounds. We teach all!!
4. What age groups do you teach?
We offer classes for all age groups, from preschool children to adults. We also run family-friendly classes where parents and children can train together.
5. Do you offer classes for people with disabilities?
Yes, we specialize in providing Taekwon-Do training for individuals with disabilities. We believe that Taekwon-Do should be accessible to everyone, regardless of physical or cognitive abilities. We are the leading provider pioneering the way not only nationally, but internationally, with the International Inclusive Taekwon-Do Association (IITA) HQs based here at 115 King Street South, Hastings, home to more than 20+ countries affiliated to our HQs at 115 King Street South! Our centre has 2 jobs, one is NZ ITF, the other is IITA! We often have delegations and officials visit the IITA HQs from time to time during the year for Instructor courses or to participate in our Inclusive Taekwon-Do events.

6. How can I join NZ ITF Taekwon-Do?

7. Do I need prior experience in martial arts to join?
No prior experience is necessary! We welcome beginners of all ages and abilities. Our instructors will guide you through the basics and help you progress at your own pace. We feel it is best to let us know if you do as some classes might not be as suitable which we have different focuses. We are happy to talk more about your needs and what you want to achieve.
8. What equipment or uniform do I need?
You will need a Taekwon-Do uniform (dobok) to take part in competitions and testing – this is not compulsory! When you are ready, we can assist you with purchasing a uniform as we hold stock at our centre, if we don’t have your size, we will order it in. If you’re new, you can start in comfortable exercise clothes and get a uniform once you’re more familiar with the training.
9. How much do classes cost?
We offer a variety of payment options, including special packages for families and schools. Please contact us for the most up-to-date pricing details and class options.
10. Are there any trial classes available?
We have a process where all interested must fill in the registration form via our website. From there, we will be in touch to talk more about what you are looking to achieve, and which classes will be the most suitable for you to attend, whether it be for you or your children or combined as a family.
Training & Classes
11. What does a typical class look like?
Our classes include a mix of warm-up exercises, stretching, technique practice, self-defense drills, sparring (optional), and fitness training. Each class is tailored to the students’ age and ability levels. We push hard and always see positive results with all of our members.
12. What levels of Taekwon-Do do you teach?
We teach all levels, from beginner to advanced, including black belts and beyond. We also offer opportunities for students to compete and advance their skills. We cover all ages and even run pre-school Taekwon-Do classes!
13. Do you offer personal training sessions?
Yes, we offer personal training sessions for students who prefer one-on-one instruction or wish to focus on specific aspects of their training.
Special Programs and Events
14. Do you hold competitions?
Yes, we organize competitions at local, national, and international levels. Students also have the opportunity to attend the ITF World Championships and other international events.
15. Are there opportunities for students to represent New Zealand internationally?
Yes, we have students who have represented New Zealand at international Taekwon-Do events, and we are actively preparing athletes for future competitions like the 2026 ITF World Cup in China.
School & Community Involvement
16. Do you work with schools?
Yes, we partner with various schools in the region to offer Taekwon-Do as part of their sports programs. Each year we hold competitions in each area to select the best to represent their schools for NZ ITF Championships. We are always working hard to expand what we do. 17. How do you support the community?
We focus on providing Taekwon-Do training to people from low socioeconomic backgrounds and individuals with disabilities. We also offer a free inclusive fitness gym and regularly participate in community events. We support everyone regardless of financial barriers.
Awards & Recognition
18. Has NZ ITF Taekwon-Do received any awards?
Yes, we recently received the 3rd Place Finalist Award for NZME Hastings City Business Awards: Social Enterprise of the Year in Hastings (2024), recognized for our work in the community with mainstream and with individuals with disabilities. The awards themselves were tough to be considered. There were over 150 applicants across 7 categories. Only 21 businesses made it through. NZ ITF was incredibly honored to receive such a prestigious award.
